A couple years ago Gibson was raided for supposedly importing illegal woods for it’s guitars. There was a lot of theories about why this happened, and it certainly seemed like Gibson was singled out for more political, then ecological reasons. Well, the wood that was confiscated in those raids has been returned after Gibson paid a $300,000 fine.
They are now using some of this wood in a special “commemorative” series of guitars, labeled “The Government Series II”. I’m sort of torn, as to whether this is pure marketing genius, earning Gibson some rock-n-roll credibility by giving “the man” the finger. Or it’s just more PR smoke.
Either way, you have your choice of a Les Paul, Flying V(for victory!), Explorer or SG. All painted in a lovely “Government Tan”, and of course, built from previously confiscated wood.
Was there a “Government Series 1”?

Seems like all the interesting guitar stuff is happening on Kickstarter these days. Kaki King, an amazing guitarist who I saw live last year, is funding a muldimedia show called “The Neck is a Bridge to the Body”. The show will use Kaki’s guitar as the primary projection screen to explore music, the guitar, and it’s relationship to the player.
It’s already surpassed it’s goal, but there’s still lot’s of perks available including a new album, which will be the soundtrack to the show, a livestream of the event if you can’t make it in person, and various private guitar lessons from Kaki.

Here’s another interesting kickstarter project. Called the “Guitar Wing”, it’s a wireless midi controller specifically designed for guitars. As someone who spends a lot of time with their guitar plugged into a computer, this looks pretty useful. Though it will look kind of awkward on certain guitar designs.

Flat Guitars is an illustration project by David Navarro, chronicling all the guitars he’d like to have in his own collection. Each illustration is based on a specific guitar, that was owned by a well known guitarist, and is done in a clean, vector style. Guitars from Johnny Cash to Zack Wylde are covered, and Dave says he’ll be adding more on a weekly basis.

“Our test subject, Is of the common variety player. Single male, age 45 to 65. He’s a self professed “expert” in tone. He is fanatical about gear, and refuses to like anything new.”
Well, Fender seems to know their buyers well:)
