A couple years ago Gibson was raided for supposedly importing illegal woods for it’s guitars. There was a lot of theories about why this happened, and it certainly seemed like Gibson was singled out for more political, then ecological reasons. Well, the wood that was confiscated in those raids has been returned after Gibson paid a $300,000 fine.
They are now using some of this wood in a special “commemorative” series of guitars, labeled “The Government Series II”. I’m sort of torn, as to whether this is pure marketing genius, earning Gibson some rock-n-roll credibility by giving “the man” the finger. Or it’s just more PR smoke.
Either way, you have your choice of a Les Paul, Flying V(for victory!), Explorer or SG. All painted in a lovely “Government Tan”, and of course, built from previously confiscated wood.
Was there a “Government Series 1”?
