Just opening yesterday, February 9th, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art – “Guitar Heroes – Legendary Craftsmen from Italy to New York”. The exhibit focuses on three talented and influential guitar builders of Italian heritage, John D’Angelico, James D’Aquisto, and John Monteleone.
Along with dozens of stunning examples of these master luthiers, there will be live performances right in the museum utilizing these gorgeous guitars. as well as two concerts. There will be demonstrations of the tools, techniques and materials on March 12-13. There will also be several related concerts during the shows run by the likes of Steve Miller, and The John Pizzarelli Quartet. A complete list of events and times is here.

Meanwhile, starting this Sunday February 13th and running till June 6th, the Museum of Modern Art will be having an exhibition of Picasso’s mixed media guitar works. Unique at the time in the way they straddled the line between painting and sculpture, using a wide variety of materials. The MoMa also has concerts running concurrently with the show. Marco Cappelli and Mamady Kouyate will play February 16th. Kaki King and Pedro da Silva will play February 23rd.
